Frequently Asked Questions
What is linen?
Linen is a naturally high-performance fabric made from the fibers of the flax plant. As one of the oldest textiles in the world, flax linen boasts a host of impressive benefits that make it stand out:
Exceptional Breathability: Linen naturally wicks away moisture, keeping you cool and dry—even on the warmest nights.
Thermoregulating Properties: It adapts to your body temperature, keeping you cool in the summer and warm in the winter for year-round comfort.
Durability: Stronger than cotton, linen is built to last. It becomes softer and more comfortable with each wash without losing its strength.
Hypoallergenic: Ideal for sensitive skin, linen is naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to bacteria and microbes.
Eco-Friendly: Flax requires less water and fewer pesticides to grow, making linen a sustainable choice. Plus, it's biodegradable at the end of its life cycle.
Quick Drying: Linen dries faster than many other fabrics, making laundry days more efficient.
Low Maintenance: Its natural texture gives a relaxed, lived-in look, so there's no need for ironing unless you prefer it crisp.
At Twofold Cooperative, we responsibly source our linen, using exclusively GOTS Certified Organic Flax and OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 dyes. This ensures our products are not only high-performing but also kind to you and the planet. Experience the unmatched benefits of flax linen and elevate your sleep with a fabric that's as functional as it is beautiful.
Why is linen more expensive than other fabrics?
Linen can be pricier because it's a bit more involved to make. Flax plants—the source of linen—need special care and specific growing conditions. Turning flax fibers into fabric is a labor-intensive process since the fibers can break easily during weaving. Plus, flax doesn't grow just anywhere, which limits how much linen can be produced.
But here's the good news: linen is incredibly durable and gets softer with every wash. It also has a smaller environmental footprint compared to cotton or bamboo, using less water and fewer pesticides.
At Twofold Cooperative, we're all about making high-quality linen accessible to everyone. Other brands often charge a premium for organic certifications or heavier linen like our rare 185 GSM, known for its durability and comfort. We think that's not fair.
Here's how we do things differently:
- Direct-to-You Model: We sell directly to you online, cutting out middlemen and avoiding traditional retail mark-ups.
- Fair Pricing: This means we can offer premium, certified organic European linen at a fair price.
- No Compromises: You get the luxury of high-end linen without the hefty price tag.
Experience the comfort and lasting quality of top-tier linen without overpaying. With Twofold Cooperative, you're getting the best of both worlds—premium linen that's kind to your wallet and the planet.
What can I expect if I'm trying linen for the first time?
Gets softer over time: Our linen starts off soft and becomes even softer with each wash. It might feel a bit heavier or more textured than cotton at first, but it quickly becomes your cozy favorite.
Relaxed look: Linen has a natural "crinkle" that gives your bed a laid-back, stylish vibe without any extra effort.
Dries quickly: Linen dries faster than many other fabrics, so laundry day is a breeze.
Built to last: Known for its strength, our 185 GSM linen is designed to last. With proper care, it can serve you well for 7-10 years or more.
Comfort in every season: Linen keeps you cool when it's hot and warm when it's cold, so you're comfortable all year round.
Healthier sleep: Linen is naturally antibacterial and gentle on your skin, promoting a clean and restful sleep environment.
Understanding GSM: GSM stands for grams per square meter—it measures fabric weight and density. Our linen is 185 GSM, offering great breathability, fewer wrinkles, excellent temperature regulation, and enhanced durability.
How do I care for my new linen bedding?
Warm: Before first use and to maintain linen for years to come wash in warm water (up to 104°F) with natural detergent free of optical brighteners for softness and appearance.
No: Avoid traditional (chemical) fabric softeners, bleach, harsh chemicals, and dry-cleaning. Vinegar-based fabric softeners are ok. For fresh stains, spot-treat with baking soda, vinegar, or a natural stain remover like OxyClean before washing.
Low: For drying, line dry or tumble dry on a low heat setting. Avoid long exposure to direct sunlight to prevent fading. If you prefer a crisp look, use a warm iron or steamer. Forgot your linen in the dryer? No worries! Toss it back in with a couple of ice cubes and tumble on low for 20 minutes.
Good to know: You might notice some lint in the first couple of washes—totally normal for natural linen! This will settle down quickly. If this is your first time with linen bedding, the texture may feel a little different at first, but like your favorite jeans fresh out of the wash, it will soften beautifully in no time.
How do I get stains out of my linen bedding?
We know spills happen! Here's how to handle stains:
- Act fast: Try to treat the stain as soon as you can.
- Spot clean: Sprinkle some baking soda on the stain and add a few drops of white vinegar, or use a gentle stain remover like OxiClean.
- Blot gently: Use a clean cloth to blot the stain—no need to scrub.
- Wash as usual: After spot treating, wash your linen like you normally would.
- For tough stains: Add a cup of white vinegar and a couple of tablespoons of baking soda to your wash along with your detergent.
Your linen should come out looking fresh and ready for another comfy night's sleep!
